Israel's Oldest Active Orphanage

Israel's oldest active Orphanage, Zion Blumenthal, was founded in 1900. The Zion Orphanage is dedicated to providing disadvantaged and homeless youth in Israel with the warmth, care and the education needed to develop into responsible adults and productive members of society.

The founder, Rabbi Abraham Yochanan Blumenthal, pioneered the practice of providing homeless children not just with a place of refuge but a home with the parental care and security of a loving family. This expression of love has continued, generation after generation, until today providing children from diverse backgrounds and different needs with essential individual attention and guidance.

Today the Orphanage, located on an acre of land in the heart of Jerusalem, serves some 100 children, ages 7-18, along with an additional 120 children as part of a yeshiva high school. While some of the 100 children are orphans, many come from dysfunctional, abusive or poverty-stricken homes placed in the orphanage by the Israeli Social Welfare Agency. Some are immigrant children from throughout the world whose parents were unable to care for them.
